KEN
CANTRELL, DVM
East Dallas Veterinary Clinic has been Dr. Cantrell's practice since October, 1972 when he began in a small office space in a multi-tenant strip shopping center. He has practiced at the same intersection of Lakeland and Ferguson since that date. The current clinic was relocated in 1982 to a new facility built next door to the old location and the Clinic has enjoyed two physical expansions since then.
In January of 2008 Dr. Cantrell sold the practice to Dr. Ellsworth. He is looking forward to spending more time with his family and pursuing his many hobbies, in particular fly fishing.
After serving in the U. S. Army Veterinary Corp from 1969-1971, he worked in group practice in South Oak Cliff prior to establishing his East Dallas Veterinary Clinic.
Dr. Cantrell graduated from Texas A&M with BS and DVM degrees in 1969.
He has been a career-long member of the American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA), Texas Veterinary Medical Association
(TVMA) and Dallas County Veterinary Medical Association
(DCVMA). He served on the Board of Directors
of the TVMA for six years, and has served as
President and in various other capacities of the DCVMA.
He has also been a member of the Texas Academy
of Veterinary Practice since its inception 25
years ago. To maintain membership in the Texas
Academy of Veterinary Practice, 50 hours of approved
continuing education per year are required. Dr.
Cantrell also serves on the Development Council
at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Texas
A &M
University. Dr. Cantrell is also licensed in New Mexico.
In addition to his many professional affiliations, Dr. Cantrell
serves on the Board of Directors for the Ferguson Road Initiative.
This is a neighborhood group established to promote the revitalization
of the Ferguson Road corridor in East Dallas and has been very
active in working for the betterment of this beautiful East Dallas
thoroughfare.
Dr. Cantrell is an avid fly-fisherman and ties his own flies.
He is currently owned by his wife and 1 cat, Lois, and the newest addition — a mixed breed rescue, named Scout. |
VIRGINIA
ELLSWORTH, DVM
Dr. Ellsworth joined EDVC in 2005. She is originally from Louisiana but happy to be in Texas. She received a BS in Biology from Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport. She continued her education at LSU where she received a second B.S. in Animal Science, then received her DVM at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Dr. Ellsworth belongs to the Dallas County, Texas and American Veterinary Medical Associations.
Dr. Ellsworth started her career with a multi-doctor clinic in Houston where she was named one of the best veterinarians in Houston. She moved to Dallas to make it possible for her husband, Sam, to begin Baylor Dental School.
Dr. Ellsworth has had a busy start to 2008 with the purchase of EDVC, PLLC and the birth of her son, Ryan. Dr. Ellsworth had been an associate with EDVC for almost three years prior to the recent change of ownership.
She has sung in choral groups since grade school and was in the Centenary College Choir while acquiring her undergraduate degree. She continues her love of singing as a loyal member of her church choir.
Dr. Ellsworth can be found on most weekends during college football season cheering for LSU. She is an avid fan! GO TIGERS!!!
She and her husband enjoy being in the great outdoors and can often be found camping, hiking, biking and boating.
The Ellsworth household has several 4-legged children — a handsome Weimaraner by the name of Roux, and two feisty calico cats, Jasmine and Lulabelle.
Jesica Martin, DVM
Dr. Jesica Martin recently moved to the Dallas area from Kansas. She has always had a love for Texas and always chose to visit Texas when given the choice of vacation spots. Dr. Martin completed her undergraduate requirements at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS. She received her DVM degree from Kansas State University, in Manhattan, KS. While at KSU, she was chosen as the first BRITE scholar, providing her with a one-year NIH-sponsored grant to pursue advanced research in ophthalmology. Her senior year she was recognized with the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists Award. Dr. Martin belongs to the Dallas County, Texas, Kansas, and American Veterinary Medical Associations.
She joined EDVC in June of 2007. Prior to receiving her doctorate, she gained significant experience through work at local animal shelters, private practice, and an emergency and specialty clinic in the Kansas City area.
Dr. Martin moved to Texas to join her new husband, Mark. Together they enjoy ballroom dancing, snow skiing, scuba diving, movies, and traveling.
Dr. Martin and her husband enjoy spending time with their young Shih Tzu, Wicket and their cat, Boots. |

Linda
Jones, RVT – Registered Veterinary Technician
Linda is our most senior employee having been with our Clinic since 1978. Linda retired in the fall of 2008 but will continue to be an honorary employee at East Dallas Veterinary Clinic for her 30 years of exemplary service.
Amanda
McDaniel, RVT – Registered Veterinary Technician
Amanda began at our Clinic in 1998 working Saturdays while she was
completing high school. She then went through the Veterinary Technology
program at Cedar Valley College (2-year program) and graduated in
2002.
Amanda has a Papillon named Titus, a small mixed breed dog named Emmitt, and a newly acquired rescue- a Boston Terrier with special needs named Eli. Amanda also does some individual mixed breed canine rescue work.
She and her husband are actively involved with their church through
volunteer work. For fun, they go fishing when time permits.

Michelle
McKenzie, RVT – Registered Veterinary Technician
Michelle is one of our more tenured employees and has been with
our Clinic since 1991. She obtained her training to become at Registered
Veterinary Technician at Texas State Technical Institute. Her prime
responsibility is running the surgery ward including pre-op, post-op
and anesthesia management.
In addition to her responsibilities as a Vet Tech, she also has
her own business – Majestic Farms. She trains and shows miniature
horses and shetland ponies, and has taken many of these to National
Champion and Hall of Fame status. This was done through competing
in halter and performance classes (hunter, jumper, driving and obstacle).
At home, Michelle has her own menagerie – dogs, cats, thoroughbred
quarter horses, shetland and miniature horses, various chickens,
ducks, geese and turkeys. She also had a raccoon she rescued as
a baby that lived with her as a companion animal for 11 years.
Nicole Lang, RVT – Registered Veterinary Technician
Nicole is the newest addition to East Dallas Veterinary Clinic. She graduated from Cedar Valley College in 2001 as a registered veterinary technician. After graduation Nicole worked at an equine hospital for 2 ½ years before she took a break to have her son. Nicole reentered the field by working as a temporary veterinary technician. She worked in many different clinics including ours. She says she joined our clinic full time after noticing our kindness towards animals and our efforts to treat pets as if they were our own. She looks forward to continue to make a difference in the lives of many animals. She currently has 2 dogs, 3 cats that were rescued from barn cat rescue, and provides homes for horses in need for Habitat for Horses. She currently has 2, Lear and Summer.

Ashley Ehrenberger, Veterinary Assistant
Ashley started at our clinic in 2007. She plans on working towards a Veterinary Techinican degree in the future and will be starting on the prerequisites this fall. Ashley has always had a love for animals and has grown up with many pets. She currently has 3 cats, 2 parakeets, 5 chickens, and goldfish. Ashley is very proud of the fact that she won her goldfish at the state fair 3 years ago and they are still part of her family today. She recently saved and adopted a puppy with parvovirus. The puppy continues to do well and has found a forever home with Ashley and her family.
Chelsea Eastburn, Veterinary Assistant
Chelsea Eastburn joined our clinic in September 2008. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and then realized her true calling was working with animals. She has over eight years experience in the field of veterinary medicine. She has worked as both a receptionist and a technician. In her spare time she volunteers with numerous rescue groups in the Dallas area. She currently resides with a Pekingese named Monster and a curious kitty named Krammer. Chelsea loves Dallas and when she is not taking care of animals loves to visit art museums, local restaurants and enjoys live music.

Laura
Shinsato, Veterinary Assistant
A Dallas native, Laura has worked as a kennel assistant on a part-time
basis for the Clinic since 1998. Prior to that she served as a dental
assistant in her father’s office until his retirement.
Rottweilers have been a major part of her life for the last 17
years. Over the past 13 years, she has shown several of her Rotties
to AKC, UKC and International championships in both the breed conformation
and Obedience venues. Laura has also taught Obedience classes and
occasionally takes board-and-train clients at her home.

Michael
McDaniel, Kennel Manager
Michael joined EDVC in 2005. Michael comes
from a family of seven where everybody loves dogs, and he has thirteen
nieces and nephews. As Michael puts it “we have one big country
family who loves fishing, eating and big dogs.”
A native of Tennessee, Michael has been part of the management
group of a family-owned carpet business as well as working for the
Home Office of Cracker Barrel.
You might notice Michael has the same last name as Amanda, one
of our long-time Vet Techs. That’s because they are married.
Amanda and Michael share their Papillon Titus, a mixed breed dog named Emmitt who is learning how to be an expert agility competitor, and a rescued Boston Terrior named Eli
Michael has a great love of fishing and sneaks away every chance
he gets to enjoy the relaxation of this sport. He is also an avid
fan of the Tennessee Titans and Volunteers.
Gerald Slaughter, Kennel Assistant
Gerald joined our clinic in August of 2008. He has 8 years of experience working with animals and is great asset to our clinic. He is always willing to help where he can and is always the first to express interest in learning new things. Gerald has a pitbull named Blue. In addition to working with us Gerald volunteers his time working as a facilitator for ANTHEM-Strong Families Dallas where he deals with kids who have a history with gangs and helps to influence them stay in school and out of trouble.

Scott Williams, Kennel Assistant
Scott Williams, a native Dallasite, joined our Clinic at the beginning of the summer in 2008 and works in our kennel. This is his first job at a veterinary clinic and he is doing a great job. He has attended two years of college at the University of Arkansas and is currently taking core classes at Richland. Scott is majoring in animal science and is deciding whether to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine or wildlife management. He has two chocolate labs (mother and daughter), Dixie and Molly, and one tabby cat. He enjoys hunting with both of his dogs.
Russell
Nelson, Kennel Assistant
Russell works part-time in our kennel and has been with our Clinic
since 1998. He had worked at another Clinic in a similar role prior
to joining EDVC. Russell performs many of the necessary repair and
maintenance procedures at the office.
In the past, Russell has owned rabbits and gerbils as well as a
Samoyed and a Belgian sheepdog.

Sunny Turpin, Pet Stylist
Sunny Turpin is our pet stylist. Sunny has over 3 years of experience and has attended grooming academies as well as training as an apprentice. She has also received specialized training in pet nutrition, pet CPR, and handling special needs pets. She currently has a ferret, 2 cats, 2 schnauzers, a Boston terrier and an English bulldog. She has been an avid animal lover since she was a child and has always had many varieties of pets ranging from Great Danes to Chihuahuas, hedgehogs, chinchillas, birds, cats, and horses. She chose to become a groomer so she could pursue her love of helping furry companions, while learning new creative pet clips. Both of her schnauzers currently have Mohawks and her female loves to have her nails painted! Her cats enjoy being shaved and even her chubby ferret enjoys partaking in bath time. Her bulldog is the newest addition to the family and has a new found love for squeaky toys. She believes that grooming is one of the best ways to bond with her pets and it reinforces the need for pack status and socialization.

Juanita Ortiz, Inventory Coordinator
Juanita Ortiz joined us in the summer of 2008. Although originally hired for data entry, Juanita has become the go-to girl at East Dallas Veterinary Clinic. She performs a wide range of functions and has recently become our Inventory Coordinator. Prior to working at our clinic, Juanita worked for the SPCA of Texas. Juanita and her husband have 3 pets- Sasha, a lab mix, Suki, a Shih-tzu, and Chiquilin, a Maltese.

Patti
Liske, Receptionist
Patti has been our Receptionist since 1999.
Patti resides with one whippet, five cats and one bird. She is
from the state of Washington and enjoys cruises to Alaska with her
mom.

Laura Wamble, Receptionist
Laura Wamble joined our practice in November 2008. She has five years of previous experience as a receptionist. Laura is committed to working with animals. She became a Certified Veterinary Assistant in spring of 2008 and is currently working on her degree to become a Registered Veterinary Technician from Cedar Valley College. Laura resides with 3 furry friends: Maverick, an English Shepherd, Ranger, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and Romeo, the resident tabby. Laura loves watching the Mavericks and likes to spend time at Billy Bob's with friends.

Louise
Southworth, Office Manager
Louise has been with our Clinic since 1998. Prior to that she served
as the Firm Administrator for a large local CPA firm for more than
20 years.
Louise has Salukis, Greyhounds and Afghan Hounds. She has competed
with her hounds in Obedience and Performance events (lure coursing
and amateur straight and oval racing) as well as the conformation
ring. She has put titles from the show ring, obedience ring and
performance event venues on several hounds as well as receiving
national recognition for their abilities.
Louise is very supportive of the efforts of breed rescue groups
and is heavily involved with Saluki Rescue as well as helping with
Greyhound and Afghan Hound Rescue.
