As dogs age, their risk of developing certain diseases — including cancer — increases. The leading cause of death in dogs in the United States, roughly a third of all dogs over the age of seven will experience some type of cancer.

November 7th marks National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day. Founded in 2015 by respected agility dog trainer Terry Simons, this annual event seeks to raise awareness for one of the most common types of malignant cancer in dogs. Terry’s beloved dog, Reveille, was diagnosed with this devastating illness in 2011, and despite valiant efforts, she passed away about a year later.

Dogs are beloved members of our families, and much like we worry about the health of our children and significant others, we also worry about the health of our precious pups. Among the greatest medical fears of dog owners is the dreaded cancer diagnosis, and unfortunately, the statistics support that fear.

From their goofy grins to their silly head tilts when we talk to them, dogs are, quite frankly, the best. As veterinarians, we know that dogs hold a special place in our clients' hearts, which is why canine cancer is certainly a topic we hope to avoid having to discuss.
